For a while now, I've been convinced that Riley knows what's up. By that, I mean, he knows I'm expecting. I've always considered him extremely intelligent (what mother doesn't think her furbaby is brilliant??) but I'm really convinced he has ESP. I know that dogs are really good at picking up on mood changes and all that jazz, but from very early on he was extra lovey with me. When we first found out we were pregnant he would walk by me and lick my leg, which was entirely unusual. He's always been a snuggler but a fly-by dog kiss wasn't his thing ever before. As for sleeping arrangements, he is usually all over the bed (up by our heads, down by our feet, snuggled between the pillows, etc) but since I've become pregnant he wants to sleep by my stomach for as long as his little body can stand the heat. This is true for our couch time together in the evenings as well. He has taken to laying across my lap in such a fashion that one of his ears is propped right up against my belly. I'm curious if he can hear our little guy in there.
Musings on life, candid reviews, and other such nonsense... who am I kidding? This has become a mom blog, plain and simple.

Furry Friday: Ho Ho Ho
It's that time of year again that I start making a list of what to get folks for Christmas, my dog included. Year to year I try to think of something creative for him. Last year we bought him the Cave Bed, although I can count on one hand how many times he's actually used it. One other year we bought him a Columbia jacket, which we really have gotten a lot of use out of (hello upstate NY snow!) Of course we buy him toys too, but it gets harder each year to buy him something he doesn't already have. Yes, he is spoiled. And yes he is a dog, so as long as it squeaks he probably won't care what the heck I get him, but you know he is my fur baby.
On more than one occasion I have commented on how smart my dog is. He is especially witty with his Kong treats (for those of you who don't know, these are tough toys that usually challenge your pet). He has pretty much figured out how to get the bones out every time. On more than one occasion he has climbed to the back of the couch with his Kong and dropped it so that the bone would fall out. It's quite comical. So this year, I think I will try to get him more items that test his skills. Doctors Foster and Smith have a lot of toys that fit this category. I think I'm going to get him the IQ Ball which will make him work for the treats.
As for the "boring" item which he'll care less about, he's getting a dental kit. Nothing says "I love you" quite like a dental kit, but hey - dental health is important in little dogs. I don't want him to have to undergo anesthesia to have the veterinarian do it, nor do I want him to have to have teeth pulled due to infection or decay. He is getting older and as the years go by his chances of having to have a tooth pulled increase exponentially. I'm just not so sure how good he'll be about having me brush his teeth, but he'll have to get over it.
Do any other pet parents out there brush their dog's teeth? Any tips or tricks?

Furry Friday: Riding Shotgun

Because we lived in Albany when we first got Riley, many of our weekends and holidays were spent traveling in the car to see family. Our little Rye-guy was completely unphased by this. In fact he gets very excited to go for a car ride. When we start packing up a bag for a weekend trip or even just a few essentials for a dinner over at my parents, he gets so antsy. He just can't wait to get outside and make a dash for the passenger side door of the car.
Recently I purchased a safety harness from Agway so that he can ride solo. Normally he rides on my lap, however, on the rare occasion that just he and I are traveling together it's much safer for him not to be in my lap. It was a bit of an adjustment for him. He couldn't decide if he wanted to sit or lay down, but eventually he settled in for the long-haul. Fortunately he's light weight enough that he doesn't trigger the air bag to be on. So all in all, it ends up being a win-win.
Do you take your pets for car-rides? What type of safety gear do you use?

Furry Friday: Space Cadet
After asking around about what other folks do for their pet's allergies, the general consensus has been to utilize Benedryl. Thank you for all the wonderful advice and commiserating. I especially loved my friend Kate's suggestion to call the vet and tell them that my 17 lb dachshund ate an adult Benedryl tab and ask them if he'll die. I got a good chuckle out of that one. I did end up calling the vet anyway because I am psychotic like that, and they did tell me the adult 25mg Benedryl tabs are just fine. Rule of thumb is 1mg for every pound of body weight. So Riley enjoyed a little more than half of an adult Benedryl tab with a cube of cheddar cheese and finally found relief from scratching his poor little face off. Let me tell you though, about an hour into Benedryl he is a total space cadet. I found him sitting in the hallway staring at the ceiling. So, I did what good mommies do and I cuddled him on the couch so he, ahem, so we could take a nap.

Pet Allergies
My poor pup has developed allergies. I don't know yet what he is allergic to, but he is scratching his face off. It's only been a few days, but I am getting concerned. We haven't changed his food. He's on Frontline and Interceptor, all that good stuff. I washed his crate bed (and no, I haven't changed our laundry detergents or anything like that. We already use additive free stuff for Justin's sensitive skin.) I am thinking of giving him a bath although it hasn't been 2 weeks since I put the Frontline on him. It's either that or Benedryl.
I had done some reading online and it appears plenty of people are giving their pets, at the recommendation of their veterinarians, Benedryl for seasonal allergies. A family member who also has three dachshunds has told me that her vet has given the ok to give two of the pink adult Benedryl pills (not the tabs/capsules) and it seems to help. I'm just a little nervous, even though our vet had mentioned Benedryl to us a while back.
When we'd first gotten Riley, he had a little soft pallet issue that would cause him to wake up from a dead sleep snorting for air. It was pretty scary. I took him to the vet right away and she said it could be one of two things: a.) a preexisting condition, or b.) a reaction to an allergen. Of which three things were available: a.) surgery to correct the situation if it persisted, b.) 1 tsp of Children's Benedryl, or c.) make him give kisses or rub his throat when it happens and hope he grows out of it. Well, we opted for the third option since the pallet thing wasn't happening all the time. We figured it was a reaction to an allergen but were a little worried as to the reaction he'd have to taking Benedryl. The vet said it could either knock him out cold or have him bouncing off the walls, which as new puppy parents already getting very little sleep this was not a risk we wanted to take.
So... we have yet to medicate the poor baby and I am *this close* to just mixing it in with his food.
Anyone else have similar experiences? Want to share your solutions?

Furry Friday - Meet Riley Chance
Inspired by a recent post over at Amanda Talar's blog, I've decided to blog about my Furbaby on this Friday. I know it's going to sound cheesy, but every now and then my husband Justin and I like to look back at photos of Riley when he was a pup. It's hard to believe he was once less than five pounds.
